The term robot has a very mixed lineage of possible root words. But most seem to agree that it comes from the ancient Latin word robota; literally translating to "serf labor".
And the concept of robots is not a relatively new idea to mankind. Depictions of artificial being created by man, albeit through the use of magic, has been recorded as for back into ancient times with golems - clay figures animated by scrolls, bronze guardian statues, and continuing on into real displays of pneumatic and hydraulic wonders; standing Greek gods, articulated knights, and a chess playing sultan.
But it was in the late twentieth century where man's curiosity about robot novelty wore out, and he started engineering robots for a more practical end. Of course, these automated workers were stripped down of all but necessary workings; large arms carrying out repetitive tasks on complex, and, often, hazardous assembly jobs. Though human employment was, initially, impacted, in the end there was a balance, and most economies found a balance.
However, it was at the beginning of the twenty first century that robotic application would take the ultimate turn, forever shaping man's world when they entered the world battle theatre. Now called drones, remote controlled and directed air vehicles, and later ground crawlers, entered the middle eastern region of Earth during, what historians would later call, the Global Terrorists Wars; later to give way to - as it would come to be known as - the Greatest World War. Walking assault arsenals of all sizes and shapes would march across the Earth's battlefields, leveling all in their path.
When the dust settled, and the rebuilding begun, Earth capped their level of technology. But robots moved into space, and onto Mars. There their potential to serve society was fully realized, as Universal Frontiers - the progenitor of The Corporate Commonwealth - would apply robotic technology to assist in all human efforts.
Today robots are employed though out The Corporate Commonwealth. Though they still, sometimes, serve military functions, it's generally reserved for, as in most fields, only the most hazard of conditions; where no living being can safely set foot. The majority of mechanical laborers are set to work in generally repetitive situations; freeing up time for citizens to pursue other interests.
Employing Mechanical labor to allow its citizens to follow paths of enrichment and self fulfillment. One more way The Corporate Commonwealth is working to better all lives throughout the Universe.
